BMW has already previewed the new i3, which will switch to the Neue Klasse platform instead of sticking to CLAR. We’ve also seen prototypes of the electric sedan out and about. Additionally, car paparazzi have caught test vehicles portraying the next-generation 3 Series on camera. However, the two different sedans have never been spotted together.

If you can’t immediately tell which is which, it’s understandable. At the beginning of the year, BMW Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk told BMWBLOG future combustion and electric models will look very much alike: “I think you will be hard-pressed [from a distance] to tell which one is the electric one and which one is the combustion engine. It’s going to be that close.”

Ok, which is which? The 3 Series “G50” is the car closer to the camera, with two-tone wheels. It also possibly has an M Sport Package, judging by the red brake calipers. The fully electric i3 “NA0” with its silver wheels has a German license plate ending in “E” – a telltale sign it’s electric. A closer look at the i3 reveals it has a shorter nose, which makes sense, considering there’s no engine underneath the hood. BMW has already confirmed it will keep the inline-six alive for the next-gen 3er, which will definitely have a longer nose than the i3.

The two cars have different beltlines. It gently rises closer to the Hofmeister kink on the gas 3 Series, whereas the i3 has a flatter beltline. Conveniently, between the two cars is a current-generation 3 Series “G20.” Of the three, the electric prototype appears to be the smallest and seemingly has a slightly shorter front overhang. We also see another i3 prototype in front of them, joined by an i4 M50, finished in what appears to be Frozen Portimao Blue.

It’s logical that BMW is concomitantly testing the next 3 Series and i3, as both will be released next year. The “G50” will reportedly enter production in November 2026, four months after the “NA0.” Later in their life cycles, the two will receive full-fat M versions.

A recent bulletin sent to BMW dealers confirms that production of the iconic BMW M8 Coupe (258F) will stop production in early 2025, officially marking the end of its run as BMW’s most luxurious grand tourers. There will be no Model Year 2026 version, and new orders for the model are no longer being accepted, according to the bulletin. Units currently in production statuses 105 or 047, as of December 20, 2024, will still be processed within one to two weeks, after which the model will be retired from BMW’s lineup. The M8 Coupe will also be removed from the BMW website and Build Your Own (BYO) configurator in January 2025. This decision leaves the M8 Convertible and M8 Gran Coupé as the remaining options for customers seeking BMW’s ultimate blend of luxury and V8 performance.

A HIGH BAR AND NARROW APPEAL

However, the departure of the M8 highlights the challenges BMW faces in positioning this model within its lineup and the broader automotive market. The M8 lineup debuted as BMW’s flagship grand tourer, reviving the name of the beautiful E31 8 Series and replacing the iconic 6 Series in the lineup. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, it delivered a breathtaking 617 horsepower in Competition trim, paired with xDrive all-wheel-drive for unmatched agility and traction. Yet, its steep starting price of approximately $138,500 (M8 Coupe) placed it in direct competition with iconic models like the Porsche 911 and its own sibling, the BMW M5.

While the M8 Coupe’s premium positioning reflected its focus as a high-performance luxury vehicle, this exclusivity may have limited its appeal to a narrower market segment. BMW’s grand tourer faced stiff competition, and despite its capabilities, it struggled to achieve the same market success as more established names. What’s particularly intriguing is the strong customer preference for the Gran Coupé models.

THE UNCERTAIN FUTURE OF THE 8 SERIES AND M8

As the M8 Coupe exits production, questions remain about the future of the 8 Series lineup. Initially, rumors suggested that a new generation of the BMW 8 Series and M8 was slated for 2026. However, our sources indicate that the final decision on their development has yet to be made. If greenlit, the next-generation 8 Series and M8 are unlikely to appear before 2029-2030.

Furthermore, the lineup may see significant changes. Speculation suggests that only the 8 Series Gran Coupe (G77) and M8 Gran Coupe (G93) will survive in the future. These models were originally planned to offer both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric drivetrain options, aligning with BMW’s strategy to blend traditional and electrified drivetrains. Notably, these vehicles would continue to use the CLAR platform instead of the Neue Klasse EV architecture.

REFLECTIONS ON THE M8 COUPE

The BMW M8 Coupe’s departure marks a bittersweet moment for enthusiasts and the brand alike. Its sleek design and impressive performance made it a notable entry in BMW’s M division lineup. While it may not have dominated in any single area, it excelled as a well-rounded and capable grand tourer. For now, the spotlight moves to the M8 Convertible and M8 Gran Coupé, but those two models will also soon be phased out.

The upcoming launch of the new iX3 represents a pivotal moment for BMW. Not only will this all-electric SUV distinguish itself from the internal combustion engine X3, but it will also serve as the first production model to utilize the much-anticipated Neue Klasse platform and design philosophy.

While the big reveal is still some time away, patent drawings have now surfaced, giving us a first look at its design—albeit through the lens of low-resolution images. We did our best to upscale them, though we’ll swap them for higher-quality versions as soon as they become available. Despite the limitations, the design details are clear enough to invite some initial observations.

A closer look reveals that the production car features smaller wheels (though that’s something that will depend on the trim) and a reduced panoramic roof, while thicker pillars and subtly reshaped bumpers further signal a shift toward everyday usability.

The patent drawings don’t show the LED graphics on the headlights and taillights, which are expected to be toned-down for production. Another interesting bit is the Y-shaped element on the rear side windows, which was also evident in the concept, albeit in transparent form.

The interior remains a mystery for now, as the patent drawings reveal nothing about the cabin. However, it is safe to assume that the iX3 will feature BMW’s new digital cockpit. This setup is expected to include a trapezoidal central touchscreen alongside the BMW Panoramic Vision display, which spans the base of the windshield. Compared to the concept, expect darker interior tones, less avant-garde design choices (a more conventional steering wheel, for instance), and the extensive use of sustainable materials.

Reports are popping up saying that the BMW Skytop concept, unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este last week, may get an actual, though very short, production run.

Marketers have long known that short-run, exclusive merchandise can encourage and engage enthusiastic crowds. The uniqueness, scarcity, and prestige of snagging a rare item can prompt many to open their wallets and even compete to make the purchase.

BMW has definitely learned that lesson. In fact, they’ve tested it out before. And BMW Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk told Automotive News (subscription required) that a production version of the Skytop concept is on the table. The report states that Hooydonk believes anywhere up to 25 cars could be built.

In 2022, BMW made 50 of the BMW 3.0 CSL to commemorate the 50th anniversary of M.

While BMW has long offered customization options ranging from simple paint color all the way to the detailed preferences possible via BMW Individual, actual limited-run vehicle production hasn’t happened all that often. Sure, the 2022 50-unit run of the BMW 3.0 CSL, celebrating the 50th anniversary of M, was an solid test for the market. But now, BMW is considering a run of the recently revealed BMW Skytop, inspired by the BMW Z8 series and the historic 507.

Could this be the beginning of an annual or more-frequent trend of short-run production vehicle models? Given all the advances in manufacturing that allow multiple models to be customized on the assembly line, virtually on the fly, it’s certainly technically possible. Will the market support it? It’s not as if dropping the reported $700k on the 50th anniversary BMW 3.0 CSL attracted the masses the way a new color for the (now almost cliche) Stanley tumbler would. But even at that price point, unique short-run BMWs could be compelling for a particularly well-heeled market.

According to a recent bulletin sent to dealers, and right on the heels of the recent reveal of the future BMW Vision Neue Klasse X, BMW will offer big rebates on current 2024 electric models through the end of April 2024. The rebates will range from $5,000-$7,000 with other potential incentives for BMW loyalists.

BMW flagship i7 can be had at a discount with BMW’s April rebates.

Through April 30, BMW’s all-electric i4 and i5 sedans will get a $5,000 incentive, while the i7 sedan and iX SAV get a $7,500 incentive. For buyers who love BMWs and want to stick with the brand, they can snag an additional $1,000 discount on the i4, $1,500 on the i5, and $3,000 on the i7.  And even if you previously strayed from the Ultimate Driving Machine to purchase an EV and live on the West Coast, Cars Direct mentions that you may be able to snag an additional $1,000 BMW BEV Conquest Credit by returning to BMW.

Lease a BMW already? The loyalty discounts also apply to leases, meaning your savings can get into five-figure territory if you lease an i7.

And while eligible BMW Car Club of America members won’t be able to stack their members-only rebate on top of this due to the previously puzzling exclusion of i-models, they can take heart that they’re more likely to be eligible for the loyalty discounts that are part of this effort.

Plus, BMW CCA members can also get an exclusive chance to test drive several of the BMW EVs at this weekend’s BimmerLife MiX event in Greer, SC. Members can attend the celebration of BMW’s M, i, and X models and participate in the scheduled test drives on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, 2024. See the full schedule for BimmerLife MiX.

Over the holiday season, BMW social media teased the masses with photos of a gift wrapped M5 Touring. As the M&Ms would say, “It does exist!” Yes, it exists and it has been confirmed by BMW. They even have a website for it.

Lately, we’ve seen spy shots of camouflaged M5 Tourings across the globe—even on U.S. soil. BMW says, “With the new edition of the BMW M5, there will be a Touring variant of the successful M model for the first time since 2007. The perfect symbiosis of M typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a renaissance in 2024 with the new BMW M5 Touring.”

The next-generation M5 has entered the “practical phase” of its development process, so I expect we’ll be seeing much more of this long-roof M machine in the coming months. BMW says, “The new high-performance model from BMW M is now completing its test drives on public roads, BMW Group proving grounds, and racetracks around the world.”

As reported previously, the incoming M5 will have a hybrid powertrain, likely based on what’s in the XM Label. The new S68 engine is 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a hot “V” and 48V hybrid system. BMW confirms, “The M5 Touring will feature a completely newly developed partially electrified drive system. Its M typical performance characteristics as well as the precisely tuned chassis technology refined with innovative systems facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in this vehicle class. Thus, BMW M GmbH is steadily progressing on its path to electrification.”

While the new M5 Touring wasn’t a present that we could unwrap in 2023, here’s to hoping that the bespoke ///M wrapping paper comes off shortly into 2024. —Mike Bevels

Just when you thought BMW was phasing out manual transmissions, they announce the 2024 Z4 M40i will be offered with row-your-own enjoyment. Like the GR Toyota Supra, which by now we all know is almost mechanically identical to the Z4 under the sheet metal, the 2024 Z4 will have an additional layer of theft prevention in the form of a six-speed-manual transmission. Did you just raise an eyebrow with interest? Me too.

As of now, the manual-equipped Z4 will only be available in M40i guise. It won’t be an à la carte option, as you’ll need to check the box for a specific performance package, which will also include an updated rear end, steering, and suspension—all geared for a sportier driving experience. The rumored price for all of this greatness is $3,500 over the $66,295 base price.

The same B58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six in the current Z4 (and a number of other BMWs) will power the 2024 Z4 M40i. With 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet, the eight-speed ZF-automatic-equipped Z4 M40i can run to 60 in under four seconds and hit the quarter mile in just over twelve. Being operated by human hands, the incoming manual version (also made by ZF) will be slower, but what you give up in performance on paper pays dividends in engagement and enjoyment.

The 2024 Z4 M40i with manual transmission will start hitting dealerships in the spring. For around $69,795, you can have the jack-of-all-trades performance-oriented Z4 roadster to enjoy birds chirping, flowers blooming, and corner carving. Now, if we could just get BMW to mass produce the BMW Concept Touring Coupe—with a manual transmission, of course. —Mike Bevels

In less than a month, BMW will unwrap the eighth generation of the 5 Series, making for 52 years of 5s. In addition to the choices of internal combustion or plug-in hybrid propulsion, the new 2024 G60 chassis will also have an all-electric option, marking the first i5 model. The i5 is expected to come in two flavors initially: the 335-horsepower rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 and the 590-horsepower all-wheel-drive M60 xDrive. This new “i” sedan will fit in nicely between the existing i4 and i7 offerings.

Only weeks away from the world premiere, final testing of the new 5 Series is still underway. BMW reports, “the development process for the first-ever BMW i5 is entering the home stretch with the fine tuning of its suspension control and driver assistance systems.” This comes after over a year of strenuous testing across a variety of environments, including the temperature and road-condition extremes of winter and summer climates, at BMWs test facilities across the world.

Testing of the eighth-generation 5 Series continues. [Photo by BMW.]

As with every new generation of vehicle, the G60 has quite a few new tricks up its wheel arches and BMW has shared a few of those ahead of the official release. First up, BMW’s ninth-generation of Vertical Dynamics Management. BMW says, “This technology is based on a newly developed, extensively networked control logic, and factors in all the available input variables–such as wheel speeds, steering angle, yaw rate and acceleration–to establish the ideal damping forces.” The goal being for the new 5 Series, regardless of power plant (and subsequent weight), to provide the luxurious ride of a larger 7 Series and the spryness of a smaller 3 Series, depending on what the driving situation calls for.

Approaching Minority Report levels of vehicle system control, the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package includes Highway Assistant. This takes the existing hands-free driving to the next level, allowing for Active Lane Change with eye activation. How does it work? “An interior camera monitors the driver’s level of alertness. In suitable situations, the system offers a lane change, which can be accepted by the driver. Looking in the side mirror initiates the lane change process and carries out the necessary steering movements. The purely visual action complements the use of the turn signal lever, which is also available as an alternative,” BMW says. Just don’t get distr—SQUIRREL!—acted.

There will not be a long grille for this 5 Series. [Photo by BMW.]

While we look forward to learning more detailed specs and cutting-edge technological advancements of the forthcoming G60 5 Series, I took a look back at the previous seven generations of 5s. The first 5 Series (E12) ran from 1972 to 1981, coming with four and six-cylinder engines. During a pleasant 5-Series-fueled YouTube distraction and came across the famous chase scene from Ronin (1998), which primarily features an E34 M5, but also gives us a peek at its E12 predecessor after a near head-on collision.

Whew. That was close. [Screencap from Ronin.]

The second generation of 5 Series (1981-1988) brought the E28 chassis and the first M5. This happens to be my favorite 5 Series body and E28 owner Tom Kapikian would probably agree with me, owning both a 535iS and an Alpina B7 Turbo. (Kapikian’s E28s can be seen in the Spring 2023 issue of BimmerLife magazine.)

Tom Kapikian’s E28s: An Alpina B7 Turbo and 535iS.

The third-generation E34 5 Series ran from 1998 to 1996 and introduced both the wagon body style and the V8 engine to the model. As previously mentioned, who could forget the great E34 M5 chase scene in Ronin? With a proper manual transmission and an S38 engine screaming under the hood, Natascha McElhone’s character expertly piloted the passenger-laden sports sedan through the streets of Paris. Whew!

An E34 Wagon!

The E39 marked the fourth generation of 5 Series, with model years spanning 1995 to 2004. Body styles included sedan and wagon, and marked the first V8-powered M5. For those who follow M539 Restorations, the E39 is a favorite of the channel’s star and creator, Sreten Milisavljevic.

Doug Rodriguez’s E39 M5 on an early morning cruise.

The fifth-generation E60 introduced controversial styling due to what many called the “Bangle Butt”. It was sold from 2003 to 2010 and introduced the first V10-powered M5. While the E60 M5 was only offered with an automatic transmission elsewhere, the U.S. received a special and highly sought after manual-transmission option.

The F10 chassis rang in the sixth 5 Series overhaul, and was produced from 2010 to 2017. A variety of new drivetrains were available in the F10, including a hybrid power plant and a new twin-turbo V8 for the M5. A “Gran Turismo” body style was introduced, but was discontinued after just a single generation.

Douglas Lerner’s F10 5 Series.

The current-generation G30 has run from 2017 to present and introduced us to the wonderful M5 CS. It also built upon the hybrid offering of the F10 chassis, introducing a plug-in hybrid model. As we’ll see by the end of the month, the all-electric i5 will take things another step further towards BMW’s sustainability and electric powertrain goals.

The upcoming G60 brings many new possibilities, including the rumor of an M5 Touring—yes, that’s right, a wagon!—coming to U.S. shores. Stay tuned as more information becomes available over the next few weeks, leading up to the world premiere of the eighth-generation 5 Series! —Mike Bevels

Time to talk about manual transmissions—and wagons—two attention-grabbing topics for the majority of enthusiasts, especially since both seem to be on the Endangered Options list these days. And yes, the title of this piece is a throwback to the show Heroes, which apparently came out a whopping sixteen years ago. I only made it through a season of that show, but I do recall the “save the cheerleader, save the world” phrase being prevalent everywhere. It was a simpler time.

Enough about yesteryear and on to why you’re here: BMW hasn’t given up on manual transmissions. In fact, despite declining sales of manual-transmission-optioned vehicles over the years, MINI recently launched a program for those who don’t know how to row their own gears to learn how. In an early-November press release, BMW touted that they would be “bringing back the fun of driving a manual transmission by launching a new MINI Manual Driving School at the BMW Performance Center in Thermal, California.” This news broke just after MINI announced that they’d also be bringing back manual transmissions to a subset of models last month.

The new 2023 M2 also will be served up with a manual transmission option. As with most—can I say all?—modern manuals, they are slower than their automatic counterparts, be they DCT, SMG, or traditional torque-converter automatics. But those who appreciate the nostalgia and driver engagement that an old-school manual can provide don’t really care about a few tenths of a second when they’re carving up their favorite back roads, right?

To go with the theme of bringing things back (in this case, to the U.S.), the next G99-chassis M5 Touring will be coming to our shores in 2025. Yes, it will be a six-figure car. Yes, it will be larger and likely heavier than previous long-roof M vehicles. But despite all that, it’s going to be one tasty performance wagon that will compete with the likes of the Audi RS6. Will it come with a manual transmission option? I’m guessing not, but we can dream. Yesterday, BimmerPost released renderings of what it could look like, as well as some salivating stats, like the S68 in hybrid setup tuned to 700 horsepower.

Manual transmissions and wagons: Are they simply coming back into style, like fashions or music? Or are they coming back because buyers and enthusiasts have been more vocal about their desire to purchase new vehicles with these features? We covered a similar story in October, reporting that BMW M CEO Frank van Meel acknowledged, “We do see the demand [for wagons] increasing, especially in regard to M, because the U.S. is our single biggest market, our most important market. We listened to our dealers and our customers, and they’re coming more and more, asking for a Touring. So we are taking that into consideration.”

How does this save the world? Well, wouldn’t we all just be happier and more optimistic people living in a land of wagons and manual transmissions—you know, the land of milk and honey?—Mike Bevels

We’re nine days away from seeing the production version of the long-awaited BMW XM, so BMW decided to build more excitement and tease us with a new video.

On Tuesday, September 27th at 6:01 p.m. EST, we’ll get to make “first contact” with the production XM, BMW’s first standalone M model since the M1, and see just how different it is from the concept we were introduced to last November. Over the last ten months we’ve learned quite a bit about the forthcoming XM both from BMW and various insiders.

Power and Performance

Powered by BMW’s new S68 engine, the XM will fall under the plug-in hybrid category. The S68, a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8, utilizes an electric motor in the transmission to increase power and torque when called upon. We’re expecting two trim levels of XM: a base with 650 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, and an over-the-top performance version with 750 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. Estimates put 0-60 times in the 3.2-second range.

Driving Experience and Handling

In May of this year, a number of automotive outlets had the opportunity to test drive the XM Prototype. There have been concerns about the XM’s weight since 7 Series G70 project manager Christoph Fagschlunger said that the XM will be BMW’s heaviest vehicle, putting estimates just shy of 6,000 pounds. Fortunately, BMW hides this weight with four-wheel steering and a very low center of gravity. Additionally, the XM will use the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, including the electronically controlled differential lock in the rear axle transmission, which should do wonders for pointing the rather-large XM in the direction you’d like to go. Large M brakes can repeatedly stop the XM with confidence. I’m sure the huge amounts of power and torque also do wonders for making the XM feel nimble.

Electric Range

Three driving modes are expected: hybrid, electric, and e-control (which holds battery charge at a certain level). In electric mode, a 50-mile range is expected. Based on reports of the S68 engine’s hybrid performance in other vehicles, we expect the electric motor integrated with the transmission to produce over 200 pound-feet of additional torque when driving in sport mode.

Styling

Based on the XM Concept and camouflaged XM Prototype, you can see where BMW is going with styling. Their concept vehicles haven’t been too far off the production vehicles, so what you’ve seen is likely what you should expect to get.

The XM will go into production at the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant later this year with orders being delivered in the first half of 2023. Prices are expected to start in the upper $100,000s. The clock’s ticking and it will be exciting to see if BMW’s XM team has any surprises up their sleeves for the unveiling on September 27th. —Mike Bevels
